Annual Security Report

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the following is Denver Seminary's Report for 2007. The Clery Act is a federal regulation that requires all public and private post secondary educational institutions participating in federal student aid programs to publish an annual report that contains three years of campus crime statistics, security policy statements and where students should go to report crimes.

Denver Seminary is committed to providing a safe environment for all members of the campus community. As our statistics indicate, we have been very fortunate in having a low campus crime rate, and for the calendar year 2007 we are pleased that no crimes considered in the Clery Act (the 11 listed below) were reported on our campus. However, we have not been crime free, and realize that appropriate policies, in conjunction with personal responsibility and vigilance on the part of all members of our community, are necessary to maintain an environment of safety. Bike thefts and car break-ins (of which there were eight in 2007) are the crimes with which we deal the most on the Denver Seminary campus. Bike thefts have diminished greatly since the addition of a locked storage building in the fall of 2007. The high number of burglaries reported for 2005 and 2006 were bike thefts and car break-ins, which are in fact not considered Clery Act crimes, but were mistakenly reported as such.

The following crime statistics have been compiled by Kent Quackenbush, Director of Auxiliary Enterprises and Physical Plant, in conjunction with the Arapahoe Community College Campus Police and the Littleton Police Department, to meet the annual reporting requirement of the Department of Education by means of the annual Campus Crime and Security Survey. These statistics are for our campus, including the residential facilities (campus apartments).

In addition, there were no reports of the above crimes on the public property adjacent to the Denver Seminary campus, and the Seminary owns/controls no non-campus property.

Denver Seminary security personnel are on call 24/7, 365 days a year at 303-783-3120 (or extension 1001 from a Seminary network phone). Students, faculty and staff should call this number immediately to report a crime, or ANY situation where they believe safety to persons or property is threatened. (911, or 9-911 from a Seminary phone, should be called whenever an emergency situation warrants.) In addition, members of the Seminary community are encouraged to call security if ever they would like an escort from a building to their car, day or night.

The following persons can be contacted directly to report a criminal offense. (Security personnel will report crimes to these people in the event a crime report is given to them):

  • Kent Quackenbush - Dir. of Auxiliary Enterprises and Physical Plant, 303-762-6923, Graber Administration Building,
  • Tom Pecora - Maintenance Supervisor, 303-762-6970, apartment building #2 maintenance office,
  • Tony Lemus - Dean of Student Services, 303-762-6901, Graber Administration Building,

In order to keep the Seminary campus community informed about safety and security issues on an ongoing basis, it is our policy to issue a warning whenever a crime is reported. If the crime is of the kind noted above (whether on our campus or the surrounding area), or law enforcement authorities notify us of a dangerous situation in progress in the vicinity of our campus, students faculty and staff will be alerted as soon as possible by one or more of the following means of communication, as deemed appropriate: Telephone intercom system, telephone tree, email, word-of-mouth, or the SchoolDispatch text messaging emergency alert system (available at no cost by subscription). The decision to make such a warning will be made by Kent Quackenbush, in consultation with other members of the Seminary administration and staff. In the event a SchoolDispatch text message is required, it will be issued by Mrs. DJ Turner (Dir. of Communications) or Tony Lemus (Dean of Students). Students, and especially campus residents, are notified of crimes such as bike thefts and car break-ins via email and the weekly Campus News.

All Seminary buildings are equipped with electronic locking systems and alarm systems that are operated according to a predetermined, seasonal schedule. Contact Kent Quackenbush, Tom Pecora, or campus security regarding any questions on access to campus buildings. The campus residences in each of the four buildings are individual, self-contained apartment units with their own exterior doors.

Denver Seminary has contracted with the Arapahoe Community College Campus Police Department for campus patrols according to a regular schedule, back-up for Seminary security personnel, training and consultation. The ACC officers are trained the same as Colorado Highway Patrol and Littleton Police (LPD) officers, and have the authority to arrest on our campus. Seminary security personnel do not have the authority to arrest, and are to call ACC or LPD officers if such action is necessary. The Seminary has an excellent relationship with the Littleton Police Department, facilitated by regular bi-monthly meetings with officers and attendance at our three times per year campus resident Neighborhood Watch Program meetings. All members of the campus community are encouraged to promptly report crimes to Seminary authorities as well as the local police.

As noted above, Denver Seminary participates in Neighborhood Watch, a national program designed to increase crime awareness and prevention. ACC Campus Police officers provide periodic training on campus safety, including an annual seminar on safety for women.
